01What's showing up
Each points to a different stage, and a property can need more than one at once.
Sand, rust flakes and other fine particles carried in with the supply settle out in glasses, clog aerators and wear at fixtures and appliances over time. A sediment stage at the point of entry is built to catch particles like these before the rest of the property sees them.
Municipal supplies are commonly treated with chlorine, and where the taste or smell shows up throughout the property rather than at one tap, carbon media at the point of entry is what addresses it.
A filter loaded with trapped particles or media nearing the end of its life restricts flow the way a clogged aerator does, only for every fixture at once. It is an easy thing to overlook until pressure has dropped noticeably.
02What each stage does
Sediment, carbon and specialty media each solve a different problem, and most properties end up using more than one.
Traps sand, rust flakes and other particles large enough to see or feel before they reach the rest of the plumbing and the fixtures it supplies. It does nothing about taste, odor or anything actually dissolved in the water, which is why it is rarely the only stage installed.
Reduces chlorine taste and odor and some other compounds as water passes through, and is usually the stage a household notices first by taste alone. It is not built to catch sediment or address hardness, so it typically runs alongside a sediment stage rather than instead of one.
Added for something a test found specifically, most often iron, and sits alongside sediment and carbon rather than replacing either of them. It is the stage most likely to differ from one property's system to the next.

03The trade-off
Every stage restricts flow a little, and more media or finer filtration restricts it a little more — a trade-off that gets little attention next to what a filter removes. A system sized to the property's actual flow rate keeps the drop small enough that it is barely noticed at any fixture.
The other side of that trade-off shows up over time: media loaded past its capacity, or a cartridge left in long after it should have been swapped, restricts flow further and stops treating the water effectively while still looking installed and working. A neglected filter left in place is worse than no filter at all, since it gives a false sense that the water is still being treated.
04Questions
A sediment stage catches sand and other visible particles, carbon reduces chlorine taste and odor and some other compounds, and a specialty stage can be added for something specific like iron. Which stages a property needs comes from what a test finds, not from picking the biggest system available.
It depends on the media and how much water passes through it, and schedules vary between sediment, carbon and specialty stages. A filter left in place well past its service life restricts flow and stops doing the job it was installed for, which is worse than having no filter at that point.
Some drop is normal, since every stage the water passes through adds a small amount of resistance. A system sized to the property's flow rate keeps that drop minor; one that is undersized, or overdue for new media, is where the difference becomes noticeable.
Where the problem is, when it started, what changed, whether the water is off, and the age of the fixture or heater involved. A photo of the problem and of any visible model label helps too.
