01Hydro jetting
Each pattern below points toward jetting as one possible answer. Which method actually fits is confirmed once the pipe itself has been seen.
A cable punches a hole through a blockage; jetting scours the pipe wall clean. When buildup keeps re-forming, that difference matters.
Jetting cuts fine roots out of the line and clears what they trapped. A camera afterwards shows whether the pipe itself needs repair.

02Fit for the pipe
The same equipment is the right call in one pipe and the wrong one in another. Which applies is judged on site, not guessed from the symptom alone.
Grease, scale, sludge and fine roots that cling to the pipe wall are what jetting is built for. Water under pressure strips the coating off the full circumference, which is why heavily used kitchen and main lines are common candidates.
A solid object, a collapsed section or a badly offset joint needs a different approach, because pressure alone cannot move something rigid out of the way. Pipe that is already cracked, corroded thin or coming apart at its joints can be pushed apart by the same force that would otherwise clean it, turning a clog into a break. Age and material are what decide whether a line can take it.

03How it works
A jetting nozzle pulls itself back through the pipe on its own hose, throwing water sideways and backward against the full wall as it goes rather than boring a single channel forward. That is the real difference between a line that has been cleared and one that has been cleaned: clearing opens a path for water to pass, while jetting strips grease, scale and root hair off the surface the water actually touches, all the way around.
Scouring the whole surface asks more of the pipe than pushing through a blockage does. A wall that is already thin, cracked at a joint or held together by the buildup itself is under a different kind of stress, and a plumber judges that condition before choosing the pressure and the nozzle rather than after.
A camera run through the line beforehand is what actually confirms condition rather than guessing from age or material alone, and the same camera afterward can confirm the wall is clean rather than assuming it from clearer flow. Neither step is needed for a simple, sound line, but both earn their place whenever there's genuine doubt about what the pipe can take.
04Cost
Some of this is about size and access. Some of it is about whether the pipe can take the pressure at all.
A line in good shape takes a standard pressure and nozzle without much thought. One with a history of root intrusion, an old material that corrodes or cracks, or a joint that has already shifted needs a lower pressure, a different nozzle, or another method entirely, and that judgment happens before the water is ever turned on.
Older clay, cast iron or original-grade plastic behaves differently under pressure than pipe installed in the last couple of decades, even when it looks sound from the outside. Age alone does not rule jetting out, but it is one more reason the condition of the specific line gets confirmed rather than assumed from its year of installation.
A short run reached through a cleanout is quick work. A longer line, one that has to be reached by pulling a fixture, or a main line running well below grade takes more time and more hose, which adds to the job regardless of what the water is clearing.
A line jetted on a routine basis clears quickly because there is little for the water to remove. One that has never been cleaned this way, or that has years of grease or root growth built up, takes longer to strip back to bare pipe, and may need more than one pass to get there.
05Questions
In sound pipe, yes. A camera inspection first confirms the line can take the pressure; badly deteriorated pipe is repaired rather than jetted.
It can, in a line that is already thin, cracked at a joint, or held together mostly by the buildup inside it. The same pressure that strips a sound pipe clean can push that kind of damage further, which is why a plumber checks the pipe's condition and adjusts the approach before starting, rather than treating every line the same way.
Clearing opens a path through whatever is blocking the line, which restores flow right away. Jetting goes further and strips the buildup off the pipe wall itself, so there is less for the next clog to grab onto. A line that keeps clogging soon after clearing is often a sign that the wall was never actually cleaned.
