01Battery backup
A backup system usually shows a sign before it is actually needed. What is happening at the pit points to what that sign means.
The backup pump ran, which means the primary pump either failed or lost power. It bought time, not indefinite protection, and the alarm is the signal to check the pit and the battery before the next storm arrives.
Backup batteries age out well before most people expect, and a backup pump is only as good as the battery behind it. One that no longer holds a charge is a backup in name only, and it usually fails quietly until the moment it's needed.
A single pump wired to household power stops the moment the power does, and a storm is often exactly what causes both to happen at once. A backup system closes that gap before it becomes a flooded pit.
02The decision
Both keep a pit pumping when the primary pump can't. They draw on a different source to do it.
A deep-cycle battery drives a second pump that shares the pit with the primary, wired independently so a tripped breaker or a neighborhood outage does not touch it. It works anywhere power can go out, and its runtime is set by how much charge the battery holds and how hard the pit is working it — light, occasional cycling stretches it far longer than water arriving fast and constant.
No battery at all: household water pressure drives a venturi that pulls water out of the pit, so it keeps running for as long as the water supply itself holds pressure. It moves less water per minute than a strong battery unit, and it depends on a dedicated connection to the water supply with a backflow preventer, so it only suits a property whose water pressure and plumbing can support one.

03Worth knowing
A backup pump is a second, complete pump living in the same pit as the primary pump — its own float switch, its own power, wired so that whatever takes out the primary pump does not touch it. It only picks up once the primary can't keep pace or has stopped altogether, and the two are usually mounted at slightly different heights so the backup only handles water the primary has already failed to move on its own.
A battery is a consumable with a service life measured in years, not a part that lasts as long as the pump around it, and one that has never been tested is an unknown quantity at the exact moment it matters most. Most backup systems include an alarm that sounds when the backup pump runs, which is usually the first and only sign that the primary pump already failed once and the property is now running on borrowed time.
04What changes it
A backup is sized to the property, not picked off a shelf. These decide what fits.
A water-powered backup only works where the water supply has enough pressure and volume to spare, and where local supply rules even allow a dedicated connection of that kind. A property on a private well, or one with marginal pressure to begin with, is usually a better fit for a battery instead.
A pit that fills slowly during a storm needs far less battery than one that fills fast, and a finished basement with a lot to lose is worth sizing more generously than an unfinished one. The right runtime is a question about the pit's own inflow, not a number that applies to every property alike.
Some pits are sized and wired for one pump only, with no room or no spare circuit for a second unit to share the space. Adding a backup to a pit like that can mean widening the pit, running new wiring, or both, before the backup pump itself goes in.
05Questions
It depends on the battery's capacity and how hard the pit is working it. Light, occasional cycling can stretch a good battery through a long outage, while a pit filling fast in a heavy storm can use up the same battery in well under an hour.
A battery backup runs on a charged battery and works regardless of what the property's water supply is doing. A water-powered backup has no battery at all — it runs on household water pressure instead, so it depends on the water supply holding pressure through the same event that took out the power.
Most last a few years even when they are never called on to run, but heat, age and how often they're actually used all shorten that. A battery that has not been tested recently is the one worth checking before the next storm season.
Water that cannot be stopped, sewage coming up, no water at all, or a smell of gas: urgent. A drip, a slow drain or a running toilet: worth fixing soon, but not tonight. When in doubt, shut off the water to the fixture and ask.
Where the problem is, when it started, what changed, whether the water is off, and the age of the fixture or heater involved. A photo of the problem and of any visible model label helps too.
