01Gas lines
Each of these calls for a different response. A smell of gas is left to the gas utility to make safe; sizing and piping work is planned with a plumber.
Leave the building, do not switch anything on or off, and call the gas utility’s emergency line from outside. A plumber repairs the line once the utility has made it safe.
A range, dryer, water heater or outdoor grill needs a properly sized line and a tested connection.
Old fittings and piping should be inspected and pressure-tested. Sections that fail the test get replaced.
02Urgency
A smell of gas is never a wait-and-see situation. Sizing a new appliance or replacing aging piping is planned work, done before it becomes one.
None of this repairs anything. All of it gets people away from a possible leak until the utility has made the building safe.
Any smell of gas means everyone leaves the property immediately, on foot, without stopping to gather belongings or investigate where it is coming from. Pets leave with the people, not after them.
Light switches, thermostats, garage door openers and anything else electrical are left exactly as they are on the way out, and no flame is lit. A spark or a flame can ignite gas that has collected in the air.
Once everyone is away from the building, the gas utility’s emergency line is who to call, using a phone that was already outside. The utility can shut the gas off at the meter or in the street while the cause is found.
Nobody goes back inside to check on a pet, a stove that may have been left on, or anything else, until the gas utility or emergency responders say it is safe to re-enter. A smell that seems to have faded outdoors is not the same as the gas being gone inside.

03Adding an appliance
Connecting a new appliance to a gas line is the easy part. Whether the line can actually feed it is the part that gets tested.
Every appliance on a gas line draws from the same supply, so a new one is sized against everything already connected to that run, not against itself alone. A furnace, a range, an outdoor grill and a dryer sharing one line add up to a single combined demand.
Gas loses a small amount of pressure over distance, so a line has to be sized larger the farther it travels from the meter to the appliance it feeds. An appliance set far from the meter needs a wider line than the same appliance placed close to it.
A gas line that is too small for what it feeds does not usually fail outright. Appliances run on less gas than they need instead, showing up as a flame that struggles to reach full size or an appliance that takes longer to do its job, especially when more than one is running at once.
04Tested, not assumed
A gas line cannot be checked for a leak by looking at it. Fittings that appear tight can still let gas past, and a joint that was sound yesterday can loosen with vibration, settling or age. Pressure testing finds what a visual check cannot: the line is sealed off, brought up to a set pressure with air or an inert gas, and watched. If the pressure holds, the line is tight. If it drops, there is a leak somewhere along the run, and the test is how it gets found before anything is put back into service.
05Materials
None of these is universal. Which one is used depends on where the run is, indoors or buried, and how it connects to what is already there.
The traditional choice for exposed indoor gas piping, threaded together in sections and run along walls, ceilings or through framing. It holds up well and has decades of use behind it, which is why it is still common in mechanical rooms and utility spaces.
A flexible tubing that runs faster through finished walls and tight framing than rigid pipe can, since fewer joints are needed to change direction. It is common in additions and remodels where opening up framing for rigid pipe would mean more demolition.
The section that goes underground, from the meter or the street to the building, is usually a different material from what continues indoors, chosen for how it holds up against soil, moisture and shifting ground over decades. It transitions to metal pipe at the point where the line comes up out of the ground.
06Questions
Leave the building, avoid switches, flames and phones until outside, and call the gas utility’s emergency line. Repair of the line comes after the utility has made it safe.
It’s a sizing question, not just a connection. The line is checked against the total demand of every appliance it already feeds, plus the new one, and against how far that appliance sits from the meter. A line that is too small does not usually fail outright — it just cannot deliver enough gas when everything runs at once.
Because a leak too small to smell or hear can still be there. A pressure test seals the line, brings it up to a set pressure, and watches whether that pressure holds. If it drops, there is a leak in the run, and where the drop happens narrows down where it is. That is how a line is confirmed tight before it goes into service, rather than assumed tight because nothing seemed wrong.
It depends on where that section of the line is. Exposed indoor runs are typically black steel pipe or a flexible corrugated stainless tubing, while the buried section between the meter or the street and the building is usually a different, more corrosion-resistant material suited to being underground for decades. The point where materials change is usually where the line comes up out of the ground.
Water that cannot be stopped, sewage coming up, no water at all, or a smell of gas: urgent. A drip, a slow drain or a running toilet: worth fixing soon, but not tonight. When in doubt, shut off the water to the fixture and ask.
Where the problem is, when it started, what changed, whether the water is off, and the age of the fixture or heater involved. A photo of the problem and of any visible model label helps too.
